Flyer Design for small business

Course Objectives

Learn layout and design skills that will help you to produce professional results when creating your own flyers, business cards and other printed promotional material.

Using powerful open-source software that’s freely available, this course will instruct you in the basics of preparing your images and text, using layout software (supplied) to design your artwork and exporting the result in a format suitable to send to a commercial printers.

What you will need to bring

PC / Mac Laptop

We have designed the course for both PC and Mac users

If you cannot bring a laptop with you one can be supplied – if this is the case please contact us as soon as possible to let us know.

Required Software

The course uses free, open-source software to create your flyer.

To prevent unnecessary delays during the training session you will need to download and install the software before the session – instructions for downloading and installing the software are provided below.

PC Users

Scribus – Downloading and Installation

Windows XP / Vista compatible

Scribus is an open-source layout application – often called Desk Top Publishing or DTP application

For Scribus to operate fully you will need to download and install two files – the application itself and a Ghostscript which is required to display certain types of graphics:

Installing Scribus on PC

  1. click here to download Scribus for PC
  2. Locate the downloaded file (called scribus-1.3.3.13-win32-install.exe) on your PC
  3. Double click the file
  4. Follow installation procedure (Instructions provided)

Installing the Scribus Ghostscript

  1. click here to download EPS Ghostscript
  2. Locate the downloaded file (called gs870w32.exe) on your PC
  3. Double click the file
  4. A Window will appear (titled Winip Self Extractor) – click Setup
  5. A Window titled GPL Ghostscript Setup will appear – Click Install

Opening the Scribus Application

  1. Double click the Scribus Shortcut on your Desktop
    OR locate the Scribus Icon in your Programs folder

Paint.net – Downloading and Installation

Windows 7 / Vista / XP

Paint.net is a powerful open-source graphics application

Installing Paint.net on PC

  1. click here to download Paint.net for PC
  2. Locate the downloaded file (called Paint.NET.3.5.2.Install.zip) on your PC
  3. Right-click the file and select Extract or Extract Here from the menu that appears
  4. A file called Paint.NET.3.5.2.Install.exe should appear – Double click this file to install Paint.net
  5. Follow Installation procedure (instructions provided)

Opening Paint.net

  1. Double click the Scribus Shortcut on your Desktop
    OR locate the Scribus Icon in your Programs folder

Mac Users

Scribus – Downloading and Installation

NB – SCRIBUS CAN ONLY BE INSTALLED ON INTEL BASED MACS

Installing Scribus on Mac

  1. click here to download Scribus for Mac OSX
  2. Locate the downloaded file (called Scribus_1.3.5.1.dmg) on your Mac
  3. Double click the file
  4. A Window will appear containing an icon titled Scribus
    Drag the Scribus Icon into your Applications folder
  5. Scribus is now installed!

Installing the Scribus Ghostscript

  1. click here to download EPS Ghostscript
  2. Locate the downloaded file (called gplgs-8.64so-ub.dmg) on your Mac
  3. Double click the file
  4. A Window will appear containing several files
    Double click the file titled GPL Ghostscript.mpkg
  5. Follow the installation process (instructions provided)

Opening the Scribus Application

  1. Locate and double click the Scribus icon in your Applications folder
